Description
Poststructuralist Resistances to Cultural Difference In a previous study I argued that the growth of ventriloquized forms of Derridean and Foucauldian poststructuralist analysis in the study of non-Western societies, cultures, and discourses was based upon the same mistaken assumptions that underpin conservative accounts of globalization. Much "critical analysis" of Asia has assumed uncritically that the entire planet has in fact been incorporated within totalizing cultural/discursive processes originating from the West. In Asian cultural studies an implicit economic determinism has at times contributed to a universalization of Western poststructuralist theory. When the globalization of capitalist markets is read in Marxist terms as leading to a global homogenization of culture then this may be used to justify the deployment of an originally Western body of theorizing to map all the world's contemporary cultures. At the present historical moment, such a conjuncture of globalization theory, Marxism, and poststructuralism can operate as a theoretical parallel to, even legitimation for, Western geopolitical hegemony. Poststructuralist analysis, like all theorizing, reflects its genealogy. In certain contexts poststructuralism may subtly perpetuate the persistent desire for universal explanations characteristic of the history of Western thought. The "application" of poststructuralism outside its culture of origin most clearly reveals its capacity to obscure cultural difference at precisely the same time that supporters claim that this body of theorizing valorizes the importance of difference.
